The Parable of the Sower

The Parable of the Sower

Passage: Matthew 13:1-9

Speaker: Cole Hartman

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

Jesus begins his parabolic discourse at the beginning of chapter 13. The first parable he tells is the Parable of the Sower. As we read, we learn that the focus of this parable is less about the Sower and more about the soils in which the seed is sown. As we learned last week about the purpose of parables, we should remember that the parables separate people. This separation is described in the Parable of the Sower making this parable the key to understanding the rest of the parables. Jesus will explain to a crowd of thousands, that His word, the message of the kingdom, will be received differently by each individual. We learn that there truly is a difference between hearing and listening and that our reception of God’s word will depend on the condition of our hearts. For us, we have a responsibility in receiving God’s Word and we need to allow God to cultivate our hearts so we can hold fast to his word.
