Deacons: The Servant-Leaders of the Church

Deacons: The Servant-Leaders of the Church

Passage: 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: The Blueprint for Building God’s Church

Category: Church-Life

Continuing with the theme of church leadership the focus now shifts towards deacons, who have a different role and responsibilities than that of the Pastor or Elder. The need for Deacons is established in Acts chapter 6, when the widows in the early church were not receiving proper care and the financial needs of the church began to grow. So, the disciples appointed Godly men to meet these needs. We must never think that Deacons have minor role in building God’s church. Stephen an early Deacon was martyred for his boldness (Acts 6:54-60) and Philip was a powerful evangelist (Acts 8 & 21). The need for qualified and gifted church leaders is as important today as it was 2,000 years ago. Because the role of the church has not changed, it is still the household of the living God, a pillar and buttress of truth. Verse 16 ends with the mystery of godliness that was revealed and fulfilled in Jesus Christ. As chapter three ends it teaches us that God places a high standard on leadership in His church. The responsibilities of Elders and Deacons are not to be taken lightly for they serve the living God.
