Giving, Praying & Fasting

Passage: Matthew 6:1-18

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Shannon

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

In Matthew chapter 5 Jesus told His disciples to let their light shine before men, so that their good works would be a light in this dark world and give glory to the Father who is in heaven (Matt. 5:16). But when we come to the first 18 verses in chapter 6, Jesus tells us to be careful when we give, pray and fast in front of other people. Is Jesus contradicting Himself? No. He is warning us against religious hypocrisy. As disciples we must practice what we preach. The lesson for us is we live in the day and age of instant gratification. We want everything now! Even the recognition for our good deeds done in the name of Jesus Christ. The danger in that is we will seek the praise of men rather than God. Christ tells us those types of deeds receive no lasting reward from God, but only the shallow approval of men. We would do well to follow Jesus’ instruction that our left hand should not know what our right hand is doing (v. 3). This means our motives for serving should be so pure and well hidden that even our hands cannot find them if they tried.
