Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

After the miracle of Jesus walking on the water he and the disciples are all in the boat together now. The storm they encountered has blown them of course. No longer are they heading north towards Bethsaida (Mk. 6:45). Their new direction is Gennesaret. A town located on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee. Once they pull up on shore the people of that city immediately recognize Jesus because his fame as a healer has spread. The faith of this city is incredible. They bring all their sick from that region (v. 35) and laid them in the marketplaces for Jesus to heal them (Mk. 6:56), when they touch the fringe of his garment (v.36a) by faith many were made well (v.36b). Once again, we see a powerful picture of Jesus’ compassion and deity on display (continued below). After the miraculous healings in Gennesaret Jesus encounters a delegate of Jewish religious leaders from Jerusalem, who are there to challenge him and his disciples. Asking bluntly, why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat (15:2). The Pharisees and the Scribes are more concerned with having clean hands than a clean heart before God! Christ immediately rebukes them for their hypocrisy turning the question around on them and asking why they are breaking the fifth commandment to honor your mother and father (Ex. 20:12). Jesus exposes the hearts of Israel’s unfaithful shepherds. They would rather hoard their possessions than provide for their parents. For the checkmate Jesus calls out their hypocrisy citing that Isaiah spoke long ago about their hard hearts.
