Jesus and Law

Jesus and Law

Passage: Matthew 5:17-26

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

Moving away from the characteristics of every disciple, Jesus shifts his focus towards the Mosaic Law, teaching that he did come to abolish it, but to fulfill its requirements (v. 17) in their entirety as the perfect sacrifice. This means everyone of us falls short (Rom. 3:23) of God’s standard for perfection and salvation by our good works is totally impossible. Only the one born under the Law (Gal. 4:4) could bear its curse (Gal. 3:13 -14) and provide the righteous of God that is needed to the enter the kingdom of heaven (v. 20). Continuing with the theme of the Law in verses 21 – 26. Jesus calls us to a new and radical way of thinking. If we are angry with our brothers and sisters in our hearts or insult them verbally, judgment is lurking at our doorstep. Our repentance must be swift, leaving our gift at the altar (v. 24), seeking reconciliation at all cost with the one we have offended even when they seek to prosecute us in court of law (v. 25). These virtues seem impossible to live out because they are! But remember the Beatitudes are our roadmap for Christ centered living under the power of the Holy Spirit.
