Jesus and the Two Demonized Men of Gadara

Jesus and the Two Demonized Men of Gadara

Passage: Matthew 8:28-34

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

After Jesus calms the storm, He and the disciples end up on the east side of Galilee in a region called Gadara. Once they are ashore, they encounter two demon possessed men who were forced to live among the tombs. They were so fierce that no one could pass that way (v. 29). Matthew records that even the unclean spirits recognize the deity of Jesus, for they cried out, “What have you to do with us O Son of God? (v. 29). Not only do they recognize His deity, but they are aware of their eternal destiny, “have you come here to torment us before the time?” (v. 29). Luke tells us the abyss (Lk. 8:31) is the temporary dwelling of demons until the final judgment. Until then the demons plead with Jesus to go into the herd of pigs and in one word, He casts them out and all 2,000 pigs (Mk. 5:13) rushed down the steep bank to their death. In response the local herdsman fled away frightened only to return with the whole town that begged Jesus to leave.
