Law and Promise

Law and Promise

Passage: Galatians 3:15-29

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Law & Grace – A Study in Galatians

Category: Faith

In Galatians 3:15-29 Paul continues to contrast Law and Grace. The message of Grace is emphasized as the message of God’s promise to Abraham. But this contrast introduces a challenge. Is the Law bad? And if the Law is bad, then why did God give the Mosaic Law? Paul will point out that there were positive reasons for the Law. The Law had an intended purpose to tutor us and prepare our hearts to receive the promise of grace through faith. God intended the Law to be an intermediary step in our spiritual development, but the Judaizers and the Pharisees shared in common an “arrested development.” They failed to progress towards grace. This can be a challenge for us as well. We can become so enamored with the do’s and don’ts of religion that we miss the message of grace. As coheirs of God’s promise, the many distinctions of life such as the distinctions between Jew and Gentile, Slave and Free, Male and Female are subordinated to our shared identity as coheirs with Christ. In Christ the ancient prejudices fall for we are all co-laborers together.
