Oaths and Revenge

Oaths and Revenge

Passage: Matthew 5:33-42

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

How often have you heard somebody attempt to establish their credibility or make a rash promise by saying, “I swear on my life” or “I swear to God?” Maybe our own lips have uttered these words, but do we really know what we just committed ourselves to? The truth is we don’t. The principle for us is we shouldn’t heap up our words to sound trustworthy. Those of old (v.33) made oaths and vows to sidestep the Law, Jesus once again goes above the demands of the Law. The requirement our Lord lays on us is simple, our integrity is measured by our speech with a simple yes or no. When it comes to matters of retaliation, the Law set forth an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth (v. 38). But under the law of grace every disciple is called to take the “moral high ground” and turn the other cheek (v. 39) something our Lord himself demonstrated for us (Matt. 26:67) but is a foreign concept in our culture today that delights in repaying evil for evil. We must remember that the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1st Cor. 1:18).
