Signs of the Times

In the 21st century, we are all meteorologists! When I was a boy, I was so impressed with the weathermen who could read maps, charts and statistical data and predict tomorrow’s weather. And then radar introduced a new level of precision. Now, we all have apps far more sophisticated than anything that the meteorologists had 20 years ago on phones in our pockets. We are all meteorologists now. But mariners long ago were not as clueless as we might assume. In our text, Jesus shares an adage that we know in a slightly briefer form, “Red sky at night is a sailor’s delight… Red sky at morning, sailor take warning!” Jesus, facing joint criticism from the Pharisees and Sadducees said that although they could anticipate the weather, they were unable to read “the signs of the times.” Later, Jesus deals with the ongoing cluelessness of His disciples. They too failed to discern the times in which they lived and as a result became obsessed with their “provisions” and failed to see that they were with the Great Provider. We live in increasingly momentous times. Many of the prophetic signs of the end times are beginning to unfold before us and many false teachers are all too eager to share their “leaven” with us. The Church of Jesus Christ is desperately in need of men and women of discernment who can read the signs of the times and navigate the tumultuous waters of social change and spiritual collapse all around us.
