The Danger of Legalism

The Danger of Legalism

Passage: Galatians 2:11-21

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Law & Grace – A Study in Galatians

Category: Faith

A Study in Galatians”- In this text we see that the tensions observed in the previous text in Jerusalem come to a full boil as Peter and Paul meet again in Antioch. There is nothing short of a Clash of the Titans, as Peter, the Apostle to the Jews and Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, collide with one another. Both men show their inherent personalities. Peter is caving to pressure from these false teachers who will later be called “Judaizers”. We have often seen this side of Peter. And Paul is confrontative, “rebuking Peter to his face because he was wrong.” There is a lot of passion in this conflict because there is a lot at stake. Peter did not fully recognize the danger that legalism posed and the degree to which imposing Judaism on the Gentiles would undercut the progress of Jesus’ gospel. This text reminds us to be passionate for the gospel. There is a danger to pursuing peace at any price.
