The Glory of the Coming King

The Glory of the Coming King

Passage: Matthew 17:1-13

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Shannon

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

In the closing verses of chapter 16, Jesus promises his disciples that he will conquer death through his resurrection by giving them a preview of his eternal glory and the promised Messianic kingdom. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” He takes his inner circle, Peter, James, and John, and leads them up a mountain where he is miraculously transfigured before them displaying his deity as the Son of God. However, Jesus and the disciples are not alone on the mountain. Two more visitors appear in glory, Moses, and Elijah. Collectively they illustrate the Law and Prophets which Jesus perfectly fulfilled. But they also represent those who will inhabit the Millennial Kingdom at the end of the age. It is here that we are given a prophetic snapshot of what the world will look like after Jesus’ Second Coming where he will rule and reign.
