The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

Passage: Matthew 18:21-35

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

As we close out Matthew chapter 18 this week. Jesus wants us to focus on forgiveness because it is one of the key ingredients for living in kingdom community. The apostle Peter asks a question that we have all asked God. “How many times should I forgive those who sin against me?” Our flesh would tell us that forgiveness has a limit but Jesus says otherwise, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy seven times.” Our Lord is not setting a numerical value on forgiveness rather he is making the point that it is unending. Jesus goes on to illustrate this simple yet deep truth in a parable about a servant who could not repay a debt that he owed. This is exactly what takes place in our lives when God pardons our sin debt. We could never pay that bill! This reality should soften our hearts making it easier to forgive those who wrong us and when we don’t God will bring discipline into our lives.
