The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven

Passage: Matthew 13:31-35

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

The kingdom of heaven began as a mustard seed planted by the ministry of Jesus Christ. From its humble beginnings in the fields of this world our Lord started with a group of 12 men. As the seed of the gospel took root in Israel 3,000 souls were added to the church at Pentecost. Slowly but surely, what began as the smallest seed in the garden will one day grow to be taller than any other plant when the kingdom is established on earth. The Parable of the Leaven explores another aspect of the growth of the Kingdom... the growth of the church's capacity to penetrate and transform society. However, there is a dark side to both of these parables. Growth can result from compromise. Many of the largest churches today are bloated because they have compromised God's moral standards. True kingdom growth is in step with Jesus' kingdom values.
