The Temptation of Christ

The Temptation of Christ

Passage: Matthew 4:1-11

Speaker: Pastor Ryan Shannon

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

Before he can begin his public ministry, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (v. 1). We might ask ourselves for what purpose? The author of Hebrews tells us plainly, for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin (Heb. 4:15). Jesus' temptation is just one more way for him to identify with us in our humanity. After 40 days without food, the Lord is at the pinnacle of physical, emotional, and spiritual weakness and this is when the devil appears. This is true of our own walk with the Lord, in our weaknesses Satan strikes and like Christ we need to be ready to defend ourselves with the word of God when temptation comes our way.
