The Two Foundations

The Two Foundations

Passage: Matthew -7:29

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

This is our final message in the Sermon on the Mount. To summarize Jesus’ longest discourse in Scripture and exhort His listeners to action Christ begins with this statement “everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (v. 24). James, the Lord’s half-brother gives similar instructions to the church in Jerusalem when he says, “but be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (Jas. 1:22). Faith in Christ will always equal action on our part, this produces wise disciples that are protected and prepared to weather the storms of life. The contrast is clear from verse 26, those who fail to heed Jesus’ words and put them into action have foolishly built their house upon sand and sooner or later when the rain falls, and the winds blow it will come crashing down and injure everyone inside. The application for us is the crowd’s response, not only were they astonished with his masterful teaching, but they recognized the authority with which He spoke, setting Him apart from the other “religious leaders” around Him (v. 29). This principle is still true today. However, many in the world and sadly quite a few Christian’s believe Jesus is not the only voice to speak for God, rather He is just one of the many paths to God. As you walk with Christ what voices do you allow to influence you?
