We Know You! Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

We Know You! Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Passage: Matthew 13:53-58

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Category: Expository Book Study

After teaching the crowds in Capernaum, Jesus heads for his hometown of Nazareth with his disciples in tow. It has been a while since he has visited the place of his youth. The last time he was there he announced his public ministry in the synagogue (Lk. 4:16 – 32) which led to him being met with violent opposition. Despite that in our text we see Jesus being faithful to his mission of seeking and saving the lost (Lk. 19:10) by giving the residents of Nazareth another opportunity to receive their Messiah. Upon entering his hometown Jesus returns to the local synagogue to teach. Initially he is warmly received because of his mighty words and powerful works. But then they begin to remember his unimpressive beginnings, Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas (v. 55)? It is here we do well to remember the parable of the mustard seed (Matt. 13:31 – 32) that taught us the work of the gospel very often has humble beginnings which grow over time. Due to their lack of faith and hard heartedness they took offense at Jesus (v. 57). For their rejection and unbelief, he withdraws his mighty works from them.
