Younger and Older

Younger and Older

Passage: 1 Timothy 5:1-16

Speaker: Pastor Stephen Palm

Series: The Blueprint for Building God’s Church

Category: Church-Life

In chapter 5 Paul instructs Timothy how to care for men and women of all age groups in the church. His primary focus is on older and younger widows who need support. Set forth in these verses are certain criteria that widows must meet for the church to help them. To us this may sound unusual and somewhat harsh, but widows who still had living family members, are to seek help and support from them. After all, God created the family to care for the family. In a sense this reflects the Triune nature of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, as family in a loving relationship. But widows who had no one to care for them were the responsibility of the church, who is their only family. Younger widows are encouraged to marry, so they will not be drawn away from Christ, and become a burden on the church but fulfill the command to be fruitful and multiply. The application for us is to care for all people, of all ages in our church. But the emphasis is placed on older people in these verses, because often they are overlooked in society and the church today.
