Viral: Part 42 - The Consultation in Jerusalem
Acts 15 is considered one of the most important chapters in the New Testament. It is situated right in the middle of Acts. But it is also a major pivot point. This is the last chapter where Peter is mentioned. The focus shifts from Jerusalem to the Gentile world at large. However, the most important aspect of this text is that it defines the essential elements of the gospel. In this chapter we learn that adding anything to the gospel subtracts its message of grace. Jesus + nothing = EVERYTHING! In this chapter, a group called "The Judaizers" seek to add the Law of Moses as an expectation for the Gentiles. Had this group won the day, Christianity would have been a small sect within Judaism. Instead, it is the largest religion in the world! This text features speeches from Peter, Paul and Barnabas and James the brother of Jesus all of which defend God's affirmation of the Gentiles. Judaism was not a layover on the path to Jesus. The Gentiles can embrace Jesus directly through faith in Him.
